When one is writing a retro-clone, how should one credit the original designers?  I know with OGL crediting the original is part of the license, but what if one is rewriting from scratch?  For instance, "Based on an original design by Steve Jackson"?  OR just a "Thanks to Steve Jackson"?

I don't feel right just leaving it out, but I'm not sure what to do.

Where the game is an unauthorized item, people usually just dedicate the game to the original designer(s) without really saying why. That gives credit to those who know without raising an extra legal issues that saying things like "based on" might.
